We do it because it’s hard

We choose to go to the Moon in this decade, and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win

John F. Kennedy
Former President of The United States of America

More than 61 years ago, John F. Kennedy gave the famous speech “We choose to go to the moon” to a college crowd in Texas; his words were so remarkable that to this day they are still resonating.

To me, every time I face a challenge and my brain proposes a half-assed solution, I say to myself: “We do it because it’s hard.”

Though simple as it may sound, those words are a rallying cry for me; they communicate to every cell of my body that I should not accept my lower instincts, that the very act of doing a difficult task will help me grow, so that they will soon be easy, and I will then go on to other challenges.

When I chose to create this website, there were many moments when I thought to myself that the course of action was too much of a hassle, that maybe I should have chosen a “ready solution” like Medium or Ghost — and don’t get me wrong, they have their benefits. But we do it because it’s hard.

It’ll be hard to be on an independent island (such as this blog), but it also gives me a lot of freedom.

The practice of visiting blogs seems to be a dying one to me, but that may make the audience more selective and more captive. Creating this blog won’t prevent me from being on other platforms; it will just make it harder — and I shall grow for it.

It is with this reflection that I welcome you to this portal, a place where I will talk mostly about tech and software development, but most certainly not only that.
